With outstanding feedback from attendees and sponsors, the Symposium was a huge success in terms of bringing the right people together, great content, and plenty of opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions. Throughout the program, the Symposium Hosts, representing companies from a diversity of industries and sizes from across the country, shared their insights and knowledge with the distinguished group of attendees through their presentations, interviews and breakout roundtable discussions.

SYMPOSIUM RECAP – WEEKEND ACTIVITIES

On Saturday evening, October 31st, sixty of our attendees, guests, and sponsors headed up the coast in a luxury motor coach for a champagne tour. One of the scenic stops was a vista overlooking the beautiful California valleys and mountains.

Following the luxury motor coach tour on Saturday evening, guests had the opportunity to sit outside and enjoy dinner overlooking Newport Beach Harbor, at one of the top restaurants in the city, “The Cannery Seafood of the Pacific.”

Eighteen golfers hit the links on Sunday morning at the Fred Couple’s designed course, the Talega Golf Club, located in the hills of San Clemente, set above the Spanish Village by the Sea and rated as one of the best golf experiences in Southern California.

A group of Executive Alliance attendees and their guests had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful California weather and biking along the coast on Sunday morning.

On Sunday evening, attendees, guests and sponsors gathered for a fun opening Reception under the stars with beach music and lively conversations.

After the evening Reception, dinner was served outside as guests continued to enjoy the beautiful California weather.

SYMPOSIUM RECAP – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND

Rich Baich, EVP and Chief Information Security Officer at Wells Fargo, opened up the National Security Leaders Symposium on Monday morning with his keynote on “The State of the Industry.” Rich had an in-depth and sobering perspective on the nature of threats facing industries that represent key components of US infrastructure. Drawing on his experience as a senior technologist at the world’s most valuable banking brand and 20 years in the Navy as a cryptographer and in security, Rich provided insights into the analysis of big data to prevent major damage. The conversation between Rich and the audience was one of the most lively and compelling at an Executive Alliance program.

In the morning session, “Mitigating Risk with Mobile Strategies For the Future,” facilitated by Symposium Emcee, Richard Warner, Geoff Aranoff, Chief Information Security Officer at Broadcom Corporation provided insights into the strategies he is developing to reduce risk as mobile usage continues to explode. Geoff discussed key areas of impact and risk to his company that he is most concerned with and why, the key components of his strategy for mitigating risk to bridge the gap between today’s mobile environment and his company’s future mobile environment, and what it takes to put together a mobile strategy for the future, with a focus on mitigating risk. Geoff’s interview provided insight on the requirements for CISOs to understand the needs of the business as they protect their organizations. As Broadcom prepares to be acquired, Geoff described the need for cooperation, communication and clarity in times of transition.

Dr. Hugh Thompson, Senior Vice President and Chief Security Strategist at Blue Coat, Platinum Sponsor, wowed the attendees with his entertaining and insightful presentation on “Taking Action: Modern Threat Intelligence Meets Today’s Reality.” Hugh spoke on while defense-in-depth is fundamental to the field of security, in today’s rapidly changing threat environment, CISOs need to reimagine defense-in-depth for all types of enterprises and organizations. Hugh explored the latest malware evasion and defense-in-depth strategies, along with new ways to deliver, consume and act upon threat intelligence to prevent attacks, rapidly recover from incidents, and anonymously share information that benefits the entire industry.

During the morning break, attendees had the opportunity to continue conversations with their peers.

There was plenty of interest from attendees to meet our sponsors during the morning break.

In the presentation on “Where Do We Go From Here? The Future State of Information Security,” Roota Almeida, Head of Information Security at Delta Dental of New Jersey, provided her insights into what she believes the future will look like in security and what to expect, how to prepare and what other areas will have impact on the industry. Roota outlined how health care data is a prime target because of the wealth of personal information contained in disparate databases. She highlighted how the issue is made more difficult by the number of people who handle the data and because the speed required to treat a patient often outweighs security in handling the data.

Neil Farquharson, Product Marketing Manager at ZixCorp, Gold Sponsor, highlighted the dilemmas facing many organizations when it comes to implementing an effective email security strategy. Neil provided input on trends they are seeing and examples of how organizations are working towards solving their email challenges.

In the interview session, Game Changers – Driving Innovation,” Scott Goodhart, Chief Information Security Officer at AES, a Fortune 200 company that generates and distributes electrical power, discussed the state of the nation’s power grid. On a week when a new book outlining the weakness of this critical infrastructure was released by journalist Ted Koppel, Scott went into detail about improvements that have been made, how the grid is segmented to prevent massive failure, and where both information security and physical security intersect.

With the beautiful California weather, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy lunch with an ocean view!

After lunch Ed Adams, Chief Executive Officer and Ponemon Institute Fellow at Security Innovation, presented on the impending advancements in the connected car. He reviewed security concerns, the immense challenges in developing the massive systems, protecting data from being hacked, and the never ending privacy concerns. Ed brough to light key examples of the challenges…an S-Class Mercedes Benz, contains 100 million lines of code, accounting for 50% of the development price of the vehicle.

The Monday afternoon Executive Roundtable discussions offered the opportunity for peer-to-peer discussions across a variety of topics. The topics were facilitated by executives attending the Summit and wrapped up with a debrief of the relevant points on each of the topics.

The first day of the National Security Leaders Symposium closed out with attendees, their guests, and sponsors attending the evening reception.

SYMPOSIUM RECAP – TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD

Matt Comyns, Executive Director, Global Cyber Security Practice Leader, with Russell Reynolds Associates, opened up the second day of the National Security Leaders Symposium by providing his insights into compensation strategies for today’s market place and for the future, new areas of increasing compensation for security executives, what is driving the need, and the shift in compensation for the industry as a whole. Matt discussed where salaries are rising at spectacular rates in some larger organizations and demand now far outstrips supply. But, Matt warned that finding a new position requires a significant investment in preparation and time interviewing. His advice to attendees is to assess what components of a new job will meet their goals and to be more open to the adventure of a technology role in another country, where demand is growing even faster than the US.

Brian Winter, Regional Sales Manager , with Accellion, Gold Sponsor, presented on “The New Enterprise Imperative – Securely Empowering the Mobile Worker.” In the executive briefing, Brian provided insights into the latest innovations in 1) secure file sharing and collaboration best practices for providing secure mobile access to enterprise content, 2) how to leverage investments in existing infrastructure and systems and benefits and 3) use cases for creating secure custom enterprise mobile apps.

Anthony Johnson, Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer, at Fannie Mae, shared insights in the session, “Leadership Challenges,” into the critical challenges he is facing today as a leader and how his responsibilities are evolving at his company. Anthony emphasized getting a handle on the primary risks to the business, not only from a security perspective, but also due to senior management wanting to better understand the ROI.

Donald Codling, Chief Information Security Officer, at UrbanFT, and Retired FBI Unit Chief with the FBI Cyber Division, presented on “Cyber Security at the Beginning of the Internet of Things Era.” Donald provided his insights into the current threat landscape, including critical infrastructure attacks and provided key points on how recent political events in eastern Europe are having a direct impact on global IT security.

In the executive briefing on “The New Security Stack” Mike Barrett, Consulting Systems Engineer, with OpenDNS , Silver Sponsor, discussed the shift to predictive security intelligence programs to better protect organizations against infiltration. Matt brought to light new attack techniques and how different security approaches can better leverage data to prevent attacks before they happen.

In the presentation, “The Human Element in Cybersecurity: Changing Employee Behavior,” Symposium Emcee, Richard Warner, discussed how organizations can raise awareness of online security risks, change employee behavior and measure results. Richard reviewed the creative ways companies are engaging employees in cyber security. ACNielsen, for example, holds a video contest among its employees every year, giving awards to those whose videos about security topics get the most employee votes. He stressed that any employee engagement program must include three components: it must be persistent, consistent and “snackable.”

The National Security Leaders Symposium wrapped up with more great interaction in the Executive Roundtables. The weather was way too nice to be indoors!

Attendees, their guests, and sponsors had the opportunity on Tuesday evening to relax at the closing reception and enjoy new friends.

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications is achieved through wireless exchange of data between nearby vehicles. Both the US and EU have issued notices to car manufacturers – very soon all cars will carry V2V equipment and broadcast speed and location constantly. V2V enables vehicles to sense hazards, issue warnings, and if necessary stop the vehicle. The US Dept. of Transportation predicts V2V will prevent 76 percent of the crashes on the roadway, saving 10,000 lives per year. But with these benefits come serious concerns about safety and privacy. Will hackers be able to take control of your car? Will the government be able to track your vehicle movements?

This presentation will provide insight into these questions as well as the following topics:
• The challenges of developing such a massive system
• The risks of software and infotainment systems in cars
• Privacy concerns (the big brother and NSA worries) This presentation will provide insight into these questions as well as the following topics:

The business challenges and the dynamics of change are forcing security and privacy leaders to rethink their roles and what success means to their organizations and to their businesses. As the leadership role of security organizations continue to evolve at a rapid pace with expanded responsibilities, the value delivered by these organizations is becoming increasingly critical to the success of the enterprise. Successful leaders are taking the long view of their role as they develop strategies to help enable their businesses to move quicker, positively impact the bottom, and ensure the protection of its assets, customers, and their brands.

In this interview session, Anthony Johnson, VP & CISO at Fannie Mae, will share insights into how he plans to deliver increasing value to his organization, what it will take to get there, and what he expects to accomplish.

With over $26 billion in revenue, The Federal National Mortgage Association’s (Fannie Mae) purpose is to expand the secondary mortgage market by securitizing mortgages in the form of mortgage-backed securities, allowing lenders to reinvest their assets into more lending and in effect increasing the number of lenders in the mortgage market by reducing the reliance on locally based savings and loan associations.
